Let's Go to the Farm!

We took our family to The Farm Dobson and had a blast!

By Heather Johnson September 23, 2021

As a former military family, we've moved our kids a lot over the years.  We try to stick to the same seasonal traditions no matter where we've lived.  One of those traditions is checking out a local pumpkin patch to collect our gourds for the fall season.  We've been to quite a few pumpkin patches, but last weekend we found a true winner near Mount Airy! The Farm in Dobson did not disappoint.  They have it all. They have thought of it all.  And we ALL loved it!

Our boys are ages 2, 5, and 13. It can be a challenge to find an activity that suits all three of them. The Farm did just that!  When we arrived, we were greeted by the kindest people at the gate. We purchased our tickets and signed the waiver. (You can sign the waiver ahead of time here).  Pumpkin, the farm dog, came to say hello too!  We walked in and our 5 & 2 year olds immediately ran to the playground to climb, swing, and slide. I'm pretty sure they could have played here all day and been the happiest little dudes.  I liked it because there was plenty of space for kids to spread out and it was clean.  Plus, the tractor swing set was just so cute.

The boys were very excited to hear about the gem mine and after the swings, we headed in that direction.  This activity was teenager approved. He had some birthday money and purchased "The Mother Load" to sift through.  He found fossils, sharks teeth, arrowheads, 1 large Amethyst druzy, and quite a few gemstones! Our 5 year old got a smaller bag of "Playdirt" and found some cool gemstones too.  The 2 year old was happy to splash in the water that ran down the chute.  All three kids were entertained at the same time!

We moved on to The Barrel Train next.  Our 5 year old and 2 year old loved this too!  They happily waved bye-bye as they rode down the dirt path.  Next up was a Dad verses Teen basketball toss and a rat race competition- all farm style of course!  After that, we took a break for a snack and to re-fuel on water.  I'm pretty sure we went on the hottest day of the season!

The bounce houses were a hit- as always!  My 5 year old yelled out "Best Day Everrrrrrr!" as he slid down the tall slide.  We then moved on to the apple canon. We received tickets with the price of admission. This was the only activity that had a short line while we were there.  It brought a smile to my face to watch the kids pick a couple of apples and fire it toward the hay bales and trees.  Some exploded in air and some made it all the way to the tree.  It was pretty impressive to watch the apples fly as far as they did.

Next up was the Hayride!  We all climbed up on the trailer and enjoyed a breezy ride with a view.  Again, all three kiddos loved checking out the crops and ponds while riding behind a very cool tractor. (The sweet family that sat across from us graciously took our family picture. I'm so thankful for this!)  After the hayride, we attempted the corn maze.  The theme for 2021 is Faith, Family, Farm and inside the maze, there are questions from the Bible giving clues to which direction you should go.  Our 13 year old beat us out of the maze, but the rest of us weren't too far behind.

At this point in our day, we were exhausted.  We still had so much more to explore, but our 2 year old had not napped and the sun was blazing.  We picked our pumpkins, grabbed some refreshments, and headed towards the car. From a mom's perspective, I thought The Farm Dobson was really well done.  It was beautiful, clean, and full of things to do for kids of all ages.  The $11 ticket price was more than fair for all that was included.  And my husband received his military discount that is offered on Sundays.  You can bring a picnic or grab food there. Be sure to wear comfy shoes that are farm appropriate. My family smiled and laughed the whole time while we were there.  With so much heaviness in the world right now, a day at The Farm was just what our family needed.
